She is known back home and surrounding areas for her vocal ability. She has traveled, recorded, and shared the stage with several artist. Katrina performed in plays all four years of high school from 2002-2006. The shows include Fame, Cinderella, Lagooned, and The Boogie Woogie Bugle girls. After graduating from cosmetology school Katrina returned to volunteer as costume designer / makeup artist for her former high schools production of Beauty and the Beast. This is Katrina’s 2nd year working with TAG. She was assistant stage manager during Tag’s production of August Wilson’s Radio Golf.
We interviewed Ms. McIntosh about her thoughts on Ma Rainey and working the The Actor’s Group:
Why is August Wilson’s play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom important to you?
This play is important to me because it tells a story that everyone can learn from. August Wilson had the gift of shining a light on real life issues. And also shared wisdom on different ways to resolve them.
What do you find most compelling about your character, Dussie Mae?
What I find most compelling about my character Dussie Mae is the sensual energy she has. There’s a strong level of confidence in her. Although she may have applied it in ways most may not agree with (lol) but you have to admire her confidence. Every woman has a little something in common with Ms. Dussie Mae and that’s the ability to to channel our sensual side. We are beautiful.
This is the second time you have worked with TAG, why is TAG important to the Honolulu community?
TAG plays a pretty big role to our local theatre community and to me personally. I am a huge fan of the arts. I don’t know a life without expressing myself in a creative way. So being so far away from home but still having the opportunity to experience this is a true blessing. The local community benefits because TAG goes to great lengths to make sure they continue to give a great show. And it’s a great way for locals to have an artistic outlet as well as explore the inner thespian :)I am very grateful to have made a connection with TAG family.
And TAG is delighted to have Katrina McIntosh as part of our family!
