Dr. Kimberly C. Ellis will give a free lecture on August Wilson’s Hill District in his life and plays, titled “May All Your Fences Have Gates: August Wilson’s Hill District” on Monday, May 9, 2016 at 5:30pm in Kennedy Theatre Room 101 on the UHM Campus.

Dr. Ellis is a scholar of American and Africana Studies and a poet, playwright and performing artist who owns both Dr. Goddess Arts, Education and Management and Fierce Star Media, Co. She is also the maternal niece of August Wilson and is the annual host for the August Wilson Monologue Competition in Pittsburgh.  Having, literally, grown up on August Wilson’s plays and in the famed Hill District that serves as the setting for the majority of Wilson dramas, Dr. Ellis is taught the first seminar course on Wilson at the University of Pittsburgh; and has also taught Black Theater and August Wilson’s Fences in China, using a Mandarin script. Dr. Ellis wrote the Introduction to the guidebook August Wilson: Pittsburgh Places in His Life and Plays by Laurence A. Glasco and Christopher Rawson, published by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. In 2013, @drgoddess live-tweeted the entire series of August Wilson’s Ten Play Cycle during its live-streamed reading at the Greene Space in New York City. Most recently, Dr. Ellis served as a Consultant on and appeared in the American Masters / WQED documentary, August Wilson: The Ground On Which I Stand, which aired February 20, 2015. Dr. Ellis is the Digital Director for The August Wilson House, an Historic Preservation Project by the Daisy Wilson Artist Community, a non-profit organization turning August Wilson’s Childhood Home into an Urban Artists Colony in the Historic Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. http://AugustWilsonHouse.com

The lecture will be co-sponsored by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Department of Theatre and Dance and TAG (The Actors’ Group).  Contact Lurana D. O’Malley at 956-9609 for more information.
