Next Up: Yellowman by Dael Orlandersmith

TAG will start 2017 with the powerhouse production, Yellowman by Dael Orlandersmith. Directed by Derrick Brown and featuring Curtis Duncan and Wendy Pearson, Yellowman is a multi-character play performed by two actors.  The play centers on the developing relationship between Eugene, a light-skinned black man, and Alma, a dark-skinned woman from childhood to adulthood.

A memory play divided into five parts, the two actors portray eight characters and explore themes of love and race. Central to Yellowman is an exploration of the “negative associations surrounding male blackness as well as the effect these racial stereotypes have on black women” (Dramatist Play Services).

Yellowman was first performed at the McCarter Theatre, January 10, 2002, in Princeton. Orlandersmith’s play was also a finalist for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, as well as the Philadelphia Barrymore Award for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Lead Actress (Orlandersmith).  In 2003, Yellowman was nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Best Play.

Yellowman is running at TAG January 13 – February 5, 2017. Get your tickets today!
